Unique and Inspiring Door Designs for your Home

A fun way to add character to a room is by adding a design to the door.  It could be as simple as placing moulding on a solid hollow core door or just even painting the door a pop of color.  I always love taking it a step further by adding a design or something unexpected.

Here are a few different ideas to take your doors to the next level.

Barn Doors

In the age of farmhouse, barn doors became almost a common appearance.  Now you can find so much inspiration on different takes of “barn doors” so that it doesn’t necessarily only fit in with a farmhouse style.  I built this door using pine wood and mimicked the look of a traditional barn door look.  Since there was no door in this space between our bathroom and bedroom, adding a sliding barn door was a great way to keep the space open.

I have also taken a more modern take on this creation when I built this sliding door.  I kept the wood design all on one plane and created a herringbone pattern.

Just by changing up the layout of the boards you can create different looks with the same barn door hardware.

Slat Doors

You have seen slat walls popping up everywhere over the past few years.  This can also be a great addition to a door.  I wanted to add character to our boho themed trailer, so I did a take on this but used half round trim instead of traditionl slats.

I wanted to give it more dimension, so I chose to use a rounded trim that would anchor a standard size full length wall mirror.  Adding contrasting colors by painting the base and staining the trim really gave it the extra pop this trailer was looking for!

Another take on a slat door was when I created a hidden door entrance with these square reeded panels.

Faux Mirror French Door

In another trailer I renovated I wanted the space to appear larger.  This could be great in any smaller area.  I found self adhesive rectangle mirrors that I arranged on the door to make it look like “windows”.  Next I framed them out with lattice boards I stained to create a French door appearance.  This was very inexpensive and was very impactful for the space!

Mirror Door

To keep with the mirror theme, you can also turn a full size mirror into an actual door!  Last year when I renovated my small walk in closet, I took this mirror from Target and built it out to be a door for my long hanging clothes.  It made the space feel bigger while keeping the much needed storage and mirror we all want ina closet.

Shiplap Door

This is yet another pretty simple upgrade that can have a big impact without breaking the bank.  You can also play around with doing not only a horizontal pattern but even vertically to give a less farmhouse look.  Laying the shiplap boards at a diagonal or herringbone pattern is yet another way to mix up this DIY.  You can see below how well it blends in to a room full of shiplap!  Hint: the door is on the left!

I hope these ideas sparked a few creative ideas for you!  Doors are the entrance to your space so let them set the tone for your design and be a statement all on their own!
