The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to count down to the festivities than with a personalized advent calendar? If you’re a fan of crafting and own a Cricut machine, you’re in for a treat! In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps of creating a delightful advent calendar that will add a touch of magic to your home this December.
Materials Needed:
Before we dive into the step-by-step process, let’s gather our materials:
- Cricut Maker 3 machine
- Smart Iron-On Vinyl in White Glitter
- Smart Permanent Vinyl in Red
- Transfer Tape
- Cricut Heat Press
- Garland
- Red Velvet Bags
- Bells
- Gold Hooks
- Small gift or treat for each day
- One 8ft 2×2
- Two 8ft 1×2’s
- 3/4″ scrap plywood for arch (optional)
- Minwax Dark Walnut Wood Stain
- Spray Polyurethane
- Brad Nailer
- Titebond Wood Glue
- Clamp
Steps:
- Cut the 2×2 in half at 48″, these will be the side pieces.
- Cut 8 1x2s that are 15″ long
- Use a brad nailer and wood glue to secure the 1x2s to the 2x2s, the top and bottom 1×2 is flat and the other 6 long ways.
- Space the 1x2s 6.75″ apart
- Cut an arch out of scrap 3/4″ plywood with the base being approx 17″ wide. You can make it as pronounced of an arch as you desire.
- Sand everything with 220 grit
- Stain or paint it as you wish, I used Minwax Special Walnut.
- Seel with Spray polyurethane
- Once dry, lightly run a really high grit sanding block (600 grit) over everything to make super smooth.
- Wipe down and measure for the hook placement
- Screw in a gold hook every 3″ you will be able to place 4 on each flat laying 1×2 (the six middle 1x2s)
- Using Cricut Design Space make the names you want to put on your baggies. I chose the font “Mahogany Script Std Regular” for the names and “Milasian Circa” for the numbers.
- Mirror them and do a basic cut on Smart Iron on Vinyl in white glitter.
- Cut them all out and weed the numbers and names to place on each baggy.
- I did 4 at a time and used the Cricut Heat Press app to get the settings for transferring them on to the velvet bags.
- I strung a bell to the strings of each bag and stuff with a treat!
- Next I cut out a sign for the top saying “The Payne Family Christmas Countdown” in Smart Permanent Red Vinyl.
- Once cut I used the transfer tape to apply it to the arch at the top.
- You can find the design I made here.
- I had the perfect spot I was trying to fill on the side of my kitchen cabinet.
- I draped a battery operated garland I found off of Amazon across the top and a little ornament from the Dollar Store!
I absolutely love the way this turned out and my boys are SO excited for December to start I can’t even tell you!
As you count down the days to Christmas, you’ll not only enjoy the daily surprises but also take pride in the handmade touch you’ve added to this cherished holiday tradition. Get ready for a month filled with joy, creativity, and the spirit of giving! Merry Christmas and happy DIYing!
