How to Build a DIY Rope Swinging Bench (Porch Swing Style)
If you’ve ever wanted one of those cozy porch swings you see in magazines—but didn’t love the price tag—this DIY rope swinging bench might be your sign to build one yourself.
I wanted something that felt sturdy, timeless, and actually comfortable, while still being simple enough to build with basic tools. This DIY swinging bench is:
-
Budget-friendly compared to store-bought porch swings
-
Built with standard lumber and rope
-
Strong and comfortable for everyday use
-
Customizable in size, finish, and hanging style
You can hang it from a pergola, swing frame, porch beam, or freestanding structure like I did.

Step-by-Step: How to Build a Rope Swinging Bench
This build is broken into two main parts:
-
Building the bench itself
-
Hanging the bench with rope
Step 1: Cut All Lumber
Start by cutting all of your pieces before assembly. This keeps the build organized and helps avoid mistakes halfway through.
Keep in associated piles with the different lengths cut—it makes assembly much easier.

Step 2: Build the Bench Frame
Assemble the base frame first using your 2×4 lumber. This frame supports all the weight, so take your time keeping everything square and secure.
Use wood glue at joints and fasten with exterior screws.

Step 3: Install the Seat Boards
Attach the seat boards evenly across the frame, keeping spacing consistent. This not only looks better but also helps with water drainage if the bench is outdoors.

Step 4: Attach the Backrest and Arms
Install the back boards and armrests. This step really defines the look and comfort of the swing.
Double-check alignment before fully securing everything.

Step 5: Sand and Finish
Sand all surfaces smooth, especially edges and corners.
Finish with:
-
Outdoor stain for a warm, natural look
-
Paint for a classic porch feel
-
Or a clear sealer to protect the wood while keeping the grain visible
Allow the finish to fully cure before hanging.

How to Hang a Rope Swinging Bench Safely
Hanging the bench properly is just as important as building it.
General Hanging Tips
-
Use rope rated for outdoor use and weight capacity
-
Hang from a structural beam, pergola, or swing frame
-
Keep rope lengths even so the bench hangs level
-
Tie secure knots and test before use, I used a buntline hitch tie.

Safety note: If you’re unsure about load ratings or structural support, always consult a professional before hanging.
