Big Boy Room – One Room Challenge Week 1

Transforming a room from toddler to big boy!

My baby boy is four years old now, needless to say the small transitional toddler bed is getting a little cramped.  I asked him if he wanted a “big boy” bed and since that question was asked not a day goes by where he doesn’t want to know when his room will be finished!

No pressure, right?! haha So without further ado I present to you my spring One Room Challenge project: Rexton’s big boy bedroom!  I have big plans for this room with a lot of fun elements that hopefully I can pull off, complete with a hidden door, stone wall and of coarse super hero’s.  My goal for this room is to have it look like a earthy and upscale room blended into a childrens room if that makes any sense!  I am trying to think ahead for easy transitions when he no longer wants super hero’s everywhere.  I want a room he can grow with but for now can also function for a small child.

Before Pictures

Mood Board

I want to stick to mostly neutral earth tones.  Wood bed, greenery, leathers, and fresh light colored linens.  I think this will be a good palette for a young man as well so it is a win win.  Let’s break down all the different projects we will tackle in here along with most of the products I have chosen, although these could always change in the next 8 weeks!

The Secret Door!

I have been wanting to do this project for so many years and finally I have a place to do it where it makes sense.  For some reason this first bedroom in our house has two separate entrances along with a two way light switch.  Not sure the reasoning for this but one of the doors is right off the front door and it always has bugged me and messed with the feng sui of the room.  My idea was to cover the entire door along with sections of the wall on either side with slats to disguise the entrance. With that comes a few daunting tasks and a little critical thinking on how to make this work but I am up for the challenge.

We never use this door and usually keep it closed on the daily.  With this area acting as corner I am hoping it will give me more options for how I set up the furniture in his room.  I am hoping this idea can come to fruition and hope you follow along to find out!

Faux Stone Wall

This is another project I have had on my mind for years.  One of my passions is renovating old RVs and I originally had this idea of creating faux stone to use in an RV as it would be lightweight and weight is always a concern with RVs.  I still have yet to do this but I thought this could be a fun opportunity to try my idea out.  Will it work? No idea!  Will I still try? You know it!

The plan is to take hard insulation foam board and sketch out a stone pattern, carve it out and cover it in a drywall compound or plaster of paris to give it more of a rock texture.  If possible I also want to get actual rock climbing handles to add in throughout so that he could actually climb it! I am hopeful it will work but still working on the how to install it to the wall part!  It may be a little time consuming as well so I am planning to cover the window wall to decrease the coverage area.  Wish me luck and patience because I think I will need both!

Closet Organization

We have the dreaded wire shelving yet again in this closet.  I don’t plan on doing a crazy build in here but I am hoping to fit his current dresser inside the closet and build around it.  It is a fairly small closet but if it can work this would free up space for him to play in his room.

Super Heros

I asked him if he wanted to display his trucks/cars or super heros and you now know what he chose.  Not sure how I am going to do these but I am hoping to have some sort of hooks for each so they all have a spot so clean up can be fun.  I also would like to have some sort of LED lighting for them to stand out and be a cool little boy feature for him.

Headboard

I will be getting a full size bed for this room and decided to go with a platform bed so that I could make the headboard.  I am thinking about making hidden bookshelves on either side of the headboard which would create a bump out ledge.  This way I can decorate above the bed on what will look somewhat like a mantle.  This way I will be able to store all of his baby books here for easy access for those bedtime stories and as he grows they can be switched out with school books.

Accents

I of coarse will be changing out the lighting, painting, adding a new rug, side tables will be added and possibly change the greenery out. Also I am already on the hunt for better toy storage.

This is going to be such a fun room to makeover and I can’t wait to take you all along for this transformation!  Be sure to tune into stories on my Instagram account as I will be documenting the entire process there.
