Are you looking to add a touch of rustic charm to your home without breaking the bank? A stacked stone feature wall might be just what you need! It’s an affordable and easy DIY project that can be completed in a day. In this tutorial, I will guide you through the steps to create a beautiful brick-inspired feature wall using stacked stone panels. Let’s get started!
Supplies you will need:
Step 1: Choose Your Stone Panels
Head over to your local home improvement store, like Home Depot, and choose the stacked stone panels that suit your style. These panels are a fantastic alternative to traditional brick panels, offering a unique and eye-catching look for your feature wall. For my parent’s back wall in their gym I wanted it to be a cool brick feature wall to tie into other areas at their house. I wanted to go a more affordable and easier route with the brick paneling from the Home Depot, however not enough panels were in stock. This stacked stone/brick panel caught my eye and since I had never seen it before I thought it would be a fun change from the traditional brick panel.
Step 2: Prepare the Wall
Before you begin, ensure your wall is clean and free from any debris. Take your stud finder and locate the studs in the wall where you’ll be installing the stone panels. Mark these spots to know where to secure the panels later.
Step 3: Level the First Panel
Walls are not always perfectly level, so it’s crucial to start with a level first panel. Use a laser level as a guide to ensure you get it right. Measure and mark the spots for any outlets on the panel, and then carefully cut them out using a skill saw or a mini skill saw.
Step 4: Install the Panels
Apply dabs of Loctite glue on the back of the stone panel to ensure a strong bond. Now, carefully position the first panel on the wall, making sure it aligns with the laser level vertical line (panels are 4 ft wide so align the level 4 ft from the wall). Secure the panel to the studs using a brad nailer and 1.5″ nails.
Step 5: Continue with the Rest of the Panels
With the first panel in place, the rest of the panels will go up easily. Ensure the grout lines match up with each added panel, and the seams are tight. You’ll likely need to rip down the last panel for your wall depending on the length of your entire wall. I used 3 full panels and ripped the last panel down to 27″ wide for the remainder of the wall.
Step 6: Blend the Seams
Now that the panels are all up, it’s time to blend the seams for a cohesive look. I first attempted to add joint compound but it was giving a “german smear” look and I didn’t want it to look too cottage like. I quickly washed it off and took another approach.
Step 7: Choose the Right Grout Colors & Blend the grout
My second attempt was to use sanded grout. I decided to run with color scheme throughout the panels so I picked up Sanded grout caulk in both Bone and Natural Gray. I used the Bone color to blend the actual stone pieces on the seams and quickly realized the Natural gray was a bit to dark to match the existing grout lines.
I ended up finding some left over paint at my mom’s house called Riviera Sand at 50% and mixing that with the gray sanded grout to lighten it up a bit. It was a perfect match and I just used a small paint brush to wipe it in the grout lines and blending it out from the seams.
Step 9: Admire Your Work
With the grout blended and dried, stand back and admire your fantastic stacked stone feature wall! It’s a super easy, affordable, and high-impact project that brings a touch of rustic elegance to your living space.
Creating a stunning stacked stone feature wall has never been easier. With just a few supplies and some creativity, you can transform any ordinary wall into a striking focal point that ties together various areas of your home. Happy DIY-ing!
